As a business owner, we have to build a team sooner or later. For many, it has become so much stressful work that they keep on postponing. till there is no other option left. Once they hire one person, things become easier for some but not for others.
In this short article, we are going to get a glimpse of the underlying psychology behind having a great, high-performing team.
You should have a proper mindset before you start hiring. By mindset, I mean reasonable expectations set so that you can at least find a few people who meet that criteria. You should not expect superhuman and you don’t go looking for the person who has all those skills that you too, have. You’re NOT looking for your replacement, yet. And certainly, you won’t get a single person who can replace you. So don’t expect that.
Be ready with the exact specifications needs for the job. I normally suggest to have expectations at 3 levels -
Level 1 - You will be very happy
Level 2 - You will be satisfied
Level 3 - You will accept
Not everyone is going to be at level 1 or level 3. But if you’re able to manage your expectations you’ll know whom to hire and whom not to! I repeat have the specification for job requirements ready & manage your expectations, too.
you get what you pay for. Pay peanuts and you’ll get all the leftovers. Pay a good amount to get good people.
You should not be afraid to hire people with big salaries because we are going to make damn sure that the salaries you pay are going to give you multiple times returns from that person.
This is NOT a place to be stingy. Of course, you have to watch your costs & cash flow very carefully.
Never depend on any one source to get all your candidates. Use as many sources as possible. This gives you greater confidence that there are many more to come. so, you don’t get fear of loss & and avoid hiring the wrong candidate.
You don’t need to make it easier for candidates. In fact, i suggest you add the following application - Questionnaire - Phone interview - HR interview - Final interview
By the time, the candidate reaches the final interview, he or she becomes desperate to get hired. You get better positioning & because of that, you hire not out of fear, but for better judgment.
That’s all there is to hire a great team.
